Review: FSA Powerbox Alloy Crankset

The FSA Powerbox Alloy Crankset is an outstanding complete setup for anyone racing or training with a coach who doesn’t want to spend the big bucks for a carbon crankset – or just doesn’t care about weight. At only 7 oz or so heavier than the carbon version for half the price, this set is a great deal.

On top of that, it’s a very handsome crank that will compliment any bike and groupset. The setup is super easy with a wireless Bluetooth connection to your head unit of choice. It probably took me less than 2 minutes to pair with my Garmin 520 and that includes renaming the device and performing its first calibration.

The spider-based power measurement is very consistent and accurate, I have yet to see any dropouts or spikes with this crankset during the 5 weeks I’ve had it installed.

It also reads right and left leg power output so you can make sure your pedal stroke is balanced. I also really like that it can take both standard and compact-sized chainrings so you have a lot of gear options with one crankset, even if the rings are proprietary which I don’t think is a downside.

If you’re looking for an affordable, versatile and very sturdy crank that can take criterium crashes and winter training rides in stride then the FSA Powerbox Alloy Crankset is for you.
